In this anecdote, scholar Kapila Vatsyayan describes a family heirloom, a hookah, that has supposedly been in the family for centuries. Over the generations, the clay bowl cracked and was replaced; the wooden pipe rotted and was replaced; the silver mouthpiece was lost and replaced.

Ramayya’s Sickle Anecdote
Ramayya used the same sickle his entire life. To keep it sharp, the blade is ground down over years until it is a mere sliver. He then has a blacksmith forge a new blade onto the old handle. Later, when the handle breaks, he fits a new handle to the blade.
