Ever since I was able to move my birding from notes/books to eBird, the fascination of what can be done with my data has grown. Even while I catch up with the several answerable and unanswered [[ebird|questions using my eBird data]], the advent of bioacoustics & AI have created ability to collect data merely by recording soundscape at any location. Birdweather is one such platforms that brings citizen data together.

One of the several ways to set up one's own bioacoustic device would be the Birdnet-Pi ([see their Github project page](https://github.com/Nachtzuster/BirdNET-Pi)). Using a Rasberry-Pi to and a mic to collect data anywhere in the world and automatically set up a bioacoustics station is now possible. Such a station would record the soundscape in that given location and use the sounds database put together by folks at Macaulay/Cornell to identify birds (sometimes animls too!) by matching to the database as well as assigning probabilities to such matches.
While my Birdnet-Pi is still being assembled, I couldnt resist the possibilty of setting up my own monitoring station using the Birdweather's own Portable Universal Codec ([Birdweather PUC](https://www.birdweather.com/shop-birdweather-puc)). Much much more expensive than the Birdnet-Pi but i couldnt help but....so here goes my live-feed of birds from my station location in southern Mysore!
I have named my Birdweather PUC-based listening station as *Stapes* after the last of the ear bones.

Meanwhile here is the explorer to see such bioacoustic activity anywhere in the world including all types of listening stations. Mine appears to be the 4th such station from India (as on 8 Feb 2025). Hopefully if my Birdnet-Pi goes up soon, that too will be among few operational yet - I see one in Bangalore rather interestingly named *Cantus bengalensis* perhaps after the cantus firmus melody(?).
